Because sometime you have to treat yourself. And when you do it, go BIG!

1. The French Laundry

Address: 6640 Washington St, Yountville, CA 94599

A Yountville farmhouse surrounded by a “perfectly manicured courtyard” and organic gardens sets the stage for what some deem “the ultimate” meal – Thomas Keller’s “four-hour”-long “beautifully plated” French-American tasting menus (available for lunch or dinner) enhanced by “incredible wine pairings” and delivered with a “flourish of attention” by a fleet of suited staff; it’s a “once-in-a-lifetime experience” – in part because costs are equally “over the top” and it’s “so difficult to get a reservation” – but you “must” go “once at least if you love food”; P.S. it’s currently closed for renovations and due back in mid-2015. 2. Restaurant at Meadowood (Chef’s Counter)

Address: 900 Meadowood Lane, St. Helena

The best table at The Restaurant at Meadowood would certainly have to be the chef’s counter. Guests wishing to enjoy the chef’s counter menu may dine inside the newly remodeled kitchen as our team prepares dinner and they look on from their seats. The experience consists of anywhere between 15 and 20 courses. A version of the counter menu may be enjoyed in the main dining room upon request. (Forbes)

3. Saison

Address: 178 Townsend St, San Francisco. CA 94107

“You can see the passion” of chef-owner Joshua Skenes – literally – as he and his crew “perform their art” “harmoniously” in the “huge open kitchen” at this “gorgeous” 18-seat New American in China Basin, where “incredible” tasting menus are served with “dramatic” “tableside presentations” and “perfect” wine pairings by a suited staff; it’s undeniably “expensive”, but believers say they’d rather “just eat a month’s worth of ramen noodles” to be able to dine here and have the “experience of a lifetime.” (Zagat)

4. Atelier Crenn

Address: 3127 Fillmore St, San Francisco, CA 94123

Dominique Crenn “cooks from her heart” at her namesake Cow Hollow atelier turning out “extravagant”, “cutting-edge” molecular-gastronomy–inspired modern Californian tasting menus that take guests on a “fantastic journey”, from “the poem presented to each guest in the beginning” and “generous” wine pairings down to “the last dessert”; the “stark” decor and “bare tables” underwhelm, but even “jaded diners” are “impressed” by the “artistic” presentations, “impeccable” service and “suspense” that precedes every course, all of which “understandably comes at a price.” (Zagat)

5. Manresa

Address: 320 Village Ln, Los Gatos, CA 95030

“Exciting, unexpected and flawless” is how devotees describe the “special experience” at chef-owner David Kinch’s Los Gatos New American – refreshed and reopened after a 2014 fire – where “sublime”, “inventive” tasting menus are inspired and sourced from its own biodynamic gardens; the “hours”-long meals served in the “sophisticated” dining room are elevated by “wonderful” wines and service that’s like “precision choreography”, and though it’s all “horribly expensive”, there’s a lounge menu too.
