Brussell sprouts are SO out…

And watermelon radishes are in!

Over the last year, I’m sure you’ve noticed that practically every restaurant is serving their perfected plate of brussell sprouts.  And don’t get me wrong, they can be delish, but I’m also getting a little bored.  So, enter the watermelon radish.  Not only are these guys super pretty, there are recipes that are starting to pop up that make them look delectable!  Like this one…

Roasted Radishes with Brown Butter, Lemon, and Radish Tops

  • 2 bunches medium watermelon radishes
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons olive oil
  • Coarse kosher salt
  • 2 tablespoons (1/4 stick) unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice

Preheat oven to 450°F. Brush large heavy-duty rimmed baking sheet with olive oil. Cut off all but 1/2 inch of green radish tops; reserve trimmed tops and rinse them well, checking for grit. Coarsely chop radish tops and set aside. Cut radishes lengthwise in half and place in medium bowl. Add 1 1/2 tablespoons olive oil and toss thoroughly to coat. Place radishes, cut side down, on prepared baking sheet; sprinkle lightly with coarse salt. Roast until radishes are crisp-tender, stirring occasionally, about 18 minutes. Season to taste with more coarse kosher salt, if desired.

At medium-high heat, Add pinch of coarse kosher salt to skillet and cook until butter browns, swirling skillet frequently to keep butter solids from burning, about 3 minutes. Remove skillet from heat and stir in fresh lemon juice.

Transfer roasted radishes to warmed shallow serving bowl and drizzle brown butter over. Sprinkle with chopped radish tops and serve.

You’re Moving…Now What?! 3 Tips for a Less Stressful Relocation

Start Early: It’s never too early to start preparation for your move. Begin to put things in boxes that you never use, or will not be using before your move. It will make you feel more at ease as the day nears closer. And trust me, it will be here before you know it.

Minimize: Don’t be afraid to get rid of things! Take a good look at the things and items that you own and make sure they are all things that you want. Give away the things you don’t want to move to your new space to Goodwill or sell them on Craigslist. This way, when you get settled in your new space, you can buy more appropriate furnishings for your new place.

Hire Help: After a certain age, it is no longer appropriate to bribe your friends with pizza and beer to move your things up and down stairs for a matter of hours. There are a handful of fantastic moving companies in the San Francisco Area who do fast, affordable residential relocations. It is always worth it in the end, and for a few hundred dollars for your things will be safely moved, and you can be unpacking in a few hours. I recommend Spartan Moving Company, Shamrock Moving & Storage, and Corrib Moving and Storage.

The Best Closet I Ever Had

Attacking a closet can be overwhelming, so proceed with caution. It’s hard to find the time to clean and more importantly keep your closet clean and organized. But once you do, you will be thrilled with how much easier it is to treat your closet like your own designated shopping area.

A few tips:

Recycle: Too many clothes? Living in an episode of Hoarders—not a cute look. Take a weekend to evaluate and play “when’s the last time you wore that?” A fun game that goes even better with champagne (cut to cheesy scene in Sex and the City 2, et al). Donate clothes to Goodwill, sell them at your local neighborhood Crossroads, or better yet–sell clothing pieces online at Etsy, Copious or Poshmark and make some extra $$$.

Sort: Sort through each section of your closet, head to toe, and make piles. If you have containers to separate each specific item or theme (hats, bags, etc.) then do so. The Container Store can be your best friend, with example custom closets built on display, it is easy to gain inspiration from walking around and finding pieces that you need to build your dream closet. Try to color coordinate, it will make finding things a breeze! Remember: Organization is an essential part of a functioning closet.

Make the Most of it: Always look for ways to maximize your space. Even a small closet has great potential to be great. Use bins, and under-bed storage for shoes, door racks and other special conscious organizational tools. Get creative, it is your space to make your own!

New Year, New You!

The New Year is all about re-invention. New haircut? Do it! New raw food cleanse? Go for it! I am an advocate for anything that produces positivity within yourself and gives you a reason to look forward to the future. Sure there are the typical New Year’s Resolutions; diet, exercise, quit smoking, cook more, etc. Most of which don’t last very long after the ball drops and the champagne falls flat. So this year, try to make the New Year about a slow and steady re-definition of yourself. You want to be able to feel good about your resolution, not guilty for breaking a promise to yourself. Here are some good examples:

  • Watch less TV: This can be done in increments, or with a buddy or partner. Trust me, after a while you’re not going to miss Fear Factor or Jersey Shore re-runs. Snooki and Joe Rogan aren’t going anywhere.
  • Join the Cause: volunteering and committing your time to something or someone can make all the difference in the world. Look up organizations that are doing something you are interested in, be it Breast Cancer 12k marathon, or a community garden, taking time out each week to help a non-profit or a philanthropic cause will show progressive change in yourself and your community.
  • Work out…your left-brain: Learning something creative takes time and patience but is often rewarding in the end. Picking up a guitar, taking a pottery or sketching class exercises the left side of your brain, and can open up a whole new side of yourself that may be virtually untapped.  You may discover a newfound passion for poetry or knitting that provides balance to your daily hectic routine.

This year, just remember slow and steady wins the race. Take it one day at a time you will be feeling fab in 2012!

Holiday Décor: 5 Crafty, Cool Ideas

Wrap it up: Too many gifts to wrap and too much ugly cheesy wrapping paper out there to do it. Don’t fret alternate options for wrapping is all the rage this season, so take your pick! A few of my faves are fabrics and newspaper; these sustainable and often reusable wrapping alternatives are a fun way to wrap gifts. Pick a few fabric patterns you like from cheap fabric stores and wrap or tie them up at the top of the box.

If you chose newspaper, make sure the section you are using is mostly all words, so the pattern looks consistent. There are also fancy embellishments you can add like the newspaper “flower”, shown below. Don’t be afraid to get a little fancy, or just stick with simple and rustic by tying the present up with twine.

Wrath of Wreaths: So far every wreath you’ve seen leaves something to be desired. You want to be creative and stand out amongst your neighbors, don’t you? This year, DIY and create an amazing edible wreath that you can use even after you take it down. Country Living shows us an edible oregano, sage, rosemary and bay leaves to create an awesome smelling and looking wreath for inside or outside. I would start by using a wire hanger, bend it into a circle, then gentle wrap the herbs around the wire and attach them with pieces of twine.

Punch it up: Oh no! Your holiday party is tomorrow and your punch is looking boring. Stiff? Yes. But it needs some flair. Not to worry, just put water in an angel food cake mold and place two rosemary twigs into the mold. Then place in your freezer to freeze overnight. When ready to place into your delicious punch, place the mold in hot water until it slips out. And voila your very own holiday rosemary ice ring that will keep your punch punching all night!

No Tree No Problem: No room for a tree this year? Or no time? No problem, there are great affordable and time saving solutions for trees to spruce up your home and make it just as festive this year. If you have ornaments and a silver or gold bowl, place them on a mantle or as a centerpiece for your dining room table. You can mix it up by adding pinecones which can be purchase at Trader Joe’s, Bed Bath and Beyond, or any craft store.

Party Favors: There are many types of garlands out there; fresh tree, imitation, sparkling green, red and gold. But why not do something different this year? Temp your houseguests with a party favor-esque garland made from Werthers candies, peppermints and other holiday treats! All your need is your favorite kinds of holiday candies and a staples or hot glue gun. String them together and staple or glue the ends together. Just make sure your garland is twice as long as your mantle for hanging. String up your candies and pin them up! Tip: make sure to have some extra on hand so your guests don’t get grabby!
